A Voice For Students With Disabilities

Long Island special education lawyer Susan Deedy recently shared the story of a former client.

“He’s a non-verbal youngster with autism who lives on the East End where there’s a scarcity of specialized support and providers,” she explained.

Susan Deedy believes expanding her team to serve more clients was the best decision she has made

“Before our involvement, his school district wanted to move him to a catch-all program which was more than an hour and a half away and unable to meet his needs. Instead, we were able to negotiate a collaborative effort where the district agreed to create a very individualized program. This child was able to stay in his own community with his neurotypical peers and, when he graduated middle school, the kids and the parents got on their feet and cheered. It was a spontaneous celebration of this student’s success in his own community.”

She paused before adding, “This is a fantastically fulfilling job.”
